Jan Peters

Dr Jan Peters MBE is a change agent, catalyst and consultant who has worked in higher education, engineering manufacturing and public policy in various roles at the DTI, NERC and National Oceanography Centre.
Alongside her PhD in electronic materials at Southampton University, Jan engaged in outreach and addressing the participation of women in science and engineering. President of the Women's Engineering Society from 2008 – 2011 she was made an MBE for services to women in engineering and science in the 2017 New Year Honours List.
Jan has been a senior policy advisor on women in STEM since 1999. She researches, writes and speakson women and intersectionality. And on transforming education to be inclusive.
A Gallup Certified Strengths Coach she has helped over 3000 people, mostly engineers, engage with their strengths, helping people focus on what they do best. She finds that the stereotype of an engineer is easily dispelled through this work. In 2018 she authored the UCL and Royal Academy of Engineering report on Designing inclusive engineering education.
Jan has an honorary doctorate in engineering from Bournemouth University and holds the role of Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor at the Open University, teaching around inclusive teams and extending learning on inclusion across engineering teaching.
Jan founded Katalytik in 2004 as an associate structured consultancy that undertakes research and evidence basedprogrammes, drawing on her science and engineering training and diverse experiences. She has been working with UCL Engineering for 9 years designing inclusion into the Integrated Engineering Programme.
Jan has been a championfor diversity in science and engineering for most of her career, culminating in being the UK National Expert on Women in Science and a founding member of the EU Helsinki Group. She was President of the Women's Engineering Society from 2008 – 2011 where shelead the campaign for better personal protective equipment for women. She has been a member of advisory boards the UK Athena Project, Construction Industry Council, Institute of Physics, Royal Society of Chemistry and Building People. She was Study Director for the InterAcademy Council report Women for Science.
